Customer Needs PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) bottles are plastic soft drink, wine, and beer bottles. PET starts as small plastic chips, which are melted down and sent to the preform. They are shaped in the preform, then are heated with an IR lamp and blown into final shape in he mold. The instruments measure the temperature at the exit of the preform. Typical pre-heaters may have 8 to 20 lines bottles. The preform has to be at the right temperature to ensure proper thickness of the skin and conformity to the shape of the mold.
These manufacturing lines are high production, high quality, and low profit margin. The customer has to achieve maximum output to be profitable. Because of this reason temperature control is an important part of the process.
