Customer Needs
Steel rebar used as a reinforcement material in concrete for roads and bridges. When the rebar corrodes it causes cracks and failures in concrete. To prevent corrosion the manufacturer will coat the rebar with a special paint. This paint is in the form of a powder, which melts and fuses when applied to the hot rebar. The coating process uses an induction heater to bring the rebar up to 360°F. When the powdered coating is sprayed onto the rebar it instantly bonds to the hot surface.
Temperature control of the process is critical. If the rebar is too hot the thickness of the coating tends to get too heavy (referred to as “cobwebbing”). If the rebar is too cool the powder coating will not bond properly to the surface.
The solution for measuring the temperature of the rebar is the Ircon Modline 3, 600 series with PID control.
Features/Benefits
Product
- Modline 3 with PID control is complete solution vs. buying a temperature sensor and separate controller.
- Mirage or Modline 3 IR Thermometer (2.0 – 2.6 μ range)
Since this is a moving process, a non-contact temperature solution makes the most sense.
Application
- Better control of coating (saving on material cost – less coating is used).
- Less chance of faulty product due to coating that is too thin, too thick, or improperly bonded.
